Spatial stream modeling of Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motacilla) foraging substrate and aquatic prey in a watershed undergoing shale gas development

چکیده

We demonstrate the use of spatial stream network models (SSNMs) to explore relationships between a semi-aquatic bioindicator songbird, Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motacilla), and monitoring benthic macroinvertebrate data in an area undergoing shale gas development. SSNMs allowed us account for autocorrelation inherent these environmental types properties that traditional modeling approaches cannot capture elucidate factors affect waterthrush foraging locations. monitored along 58.1 km 1st- 2nd-order headwater tributaries (n = 14) northwestern West Virginia over two year period (2013–2014), sampled macroinvertebrates territories, collected wetted perimeter channel water chemistry 50 m fixed point grid. Spatial outperformed regression made statistical difference whether covariates interest were considered relatable foraging. probability index (FPI) was greater areas where family genus-level multi-metric indices biotic integrity higher (i.e. WVSCI GLIMPSS). found both among flow connected unconnected sites on relatively further upstream locations GLIMPSS predicted be highest. While there no significant relationship FPI land catchment scale, information trophic dynamics bioaccumulation surface contaminants is needed before establishing extent which may affected by

Shale gas development: a smart regulation framework.

Advances in directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing have sparked a natural gas boom from shale formations in the United States. Regulators face a rapidly changing industry comprised of hundreds of players, operating tens of thousands of wells across 30 states. They are often challenged to respond by budget cuts, a brain drain to industry, regulations designed for conventional gas developm...

The Economics of Shale Gas Development

In the past decade, innovations in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling have fueled a boom in the production of natural gas (as well as oil) from geological formations—primarily deep shales—in which hydrocarbon production was previously unprofitable. Impacts on US fossil fuel production and the US economy more broadly have been transformative, even in the first decade. The boom has been...

Prey exchange between a stream and its forested watershed elevates predator densities in both habitats.

O the 27th of March, 2000, ecology lost two leaders who leave important legacies to the study of food webs. Shigeru Nakano, whose paper with Masashi Murakami appears in this issue of PNAS (1), was visiting Gary Polis at his field site in Baja California. Polis, Nakano, and three other colleagues perished when their boat capsized in a violent, unexpected storm offshore from Bahia de Los Angeles ...

Intelligent fracture creation for shale gas development

Shale gas represents a major fraction of the proven reserves of natural gas in the United States and a collection of other countries. Higher gas prices and the need for cleaner fuels provides motivation for commercializing shale gas deposits even though the cost is substantially higher than traditional gas deposits. Recent advances in horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing, whi...
